Rhizome structure and habit

Rhizomes are underground stems which produce the culms. Roots are formed at the nodes to supply water and nutrients.

There are two main types of Rhizome:

Pachymorph
Forms a Clump (Sympodial Habit)

Leptomorph
Forms a loose Clump or runs. (Monopodial Habit)

Different growing conditions can effect the habits and intermediate forms of Rhizome are often produced.
