A medium sized deciduous shrub with upright stems bearing red - purple leaves that turn even brighter in the autumn. Small yellow flowers late summer. Red berries in autumn. Sun or part shade. Grows to 1.5m x 0.6m in 10 years. Low maintenance and useful anywhere.

'Barberry'. New, dwarf shrub with orange tinted new growth, turning to red all summer. Columnar in habit and similar, but smaller in habit to its parent plant 'Helmond Pillar' turning deep purple with splashes of fiery orange and red. Yellow flowers in early summer followed by red berries. Plant Breeders Rights. Grows to 1.25m X 0.5m in 10 years. Prune hard in the early years, so ideal for hedging.
Best in sun or semi - shade, in well drained soil.

'Barberry'. Deep red - purple foliage, with green undertones turns bright red in autumn. Red new growth. Ideal for a prickly hedge. Yellow flowers in spring. This is a cross between B. thunbergii and B. vulgaris making it vigorous and will reach full height quickly. Masses of cascading clusters of red berries light the tree up in autumn. Grows to about 2.5 - 3m when mature, but can be kept pruned. Given an Award of Garden Merit by the RHS.

Will grow into a stunning large pyramidal tree 25 - 35m high with deep purple leaves, also makes a stunning hedge with the russet old leaves staying on right through the winter. Red and purple autumn colours. Seed grown versions have a variable leaf colour and these are actually the 'Copper Beech'. Both are shallow rooted so underplanting is not advisable.
