'Indian Horse Chestnut'. Dome shaped deciduous tree which grows to 30m x 12m in time. White hermaphrodite flowers are held upright in neat pyramids in summer. Shiny brown seeds produced in autumn, which are good for flour production.

Ideal for large bonsai, large landscapes, parklands.

Cedrus atlantica
'Atlas Cedar'. This evergreen Cedar is native to the Atlas mountains of Algeria and Morocco. Grows into a large tree more tolerant to hot, dry conditions than most other conifers. Pyramidal when young, becoming flat topped and spreading when older. Will grow to 10 - 15 m high or more. Bears male flowers in the lower part of the tree and the upright, purplish female cones in the upper half. The cones take two years to mature. Grey, smooth bark.

Best in sun. Happy in most well - drained soils.

'Deodar Cedar'. National tree of Pakistan, but widespread across the western Himalayas. Happy in dry soils. Conical, evergreen habit with pendulous blue - green foliage. Upright blue - green cones. Requires plenty of room as is fast growing and has a spreading habit. Will grow to 25m high when mature. Barrel - shaped female cones release winged seeds after 12 months. Male flowers are smaller and shed their pollen in autumn.

'Cedar of Lebanon'. Magnificent tree with a flat top and horizontal branches bearing barrel - shaped cones. Mentioned in the Bible more times than any other tree. Excellent sweet smelling timber for furniture makers and many other uses. The resin was used to embalm by the ancient Egyptians, and the sawdust said to have been found in a Pharaoh's tomb. Will grow up to 25 - 40m when mature. Seed cones are produced every second year, and mature 12 months from pollination.
